Overview

Where? Can be viewed at Coniston if serious interest The original and possibly still the best folding kayak, made in Germany since about 1910, early models even crossed the Atlantic, and versions are still used by various marine Special Forces (inc. the Cockleshell Heroes). Newer materials might now be used but the design and construction remains little changed, and spare parts are easily available from the factory. We bought this boat direct from the factory in 1984! The then owner, who gave us a guided tour and a personal instruction on the boat’s assembly said we would get 40 years’ use from the frame and 25 years’ from the canvas/rubberised skin/hull. He was right about the skin – we replaced it with a hand-made new one in about 2010, and it has had very little use since then. The original frame is almost as good as new, revarnished and still has years’ of use yet to come. There are just some minor elements of wear and tear. This is truly a sea-going, incredibly stable expedition boat for two people, with a load capacity of c. 350kg for camping equipment, food and cooking gear, and includes a full sail rig for extra fun on inshore waters. We have kayaked/sailed extensively on the West Coast of Scotland, Coniston, France (Brittany, Biarritz, Corsica), the Italian and Swiss lakes. Sadly age has caught up with us and the boat is now too heavy for us to use. Time for another generation to take over and have years’ more fun. The boat packs down to 3 storage bags plus a sail bag, and will fit inside a family car. The boat is currently with us in France, but we will take it to the UK for trials on Coniston in June if there is serious interest. Its currently on Ebay France/International, but we cannot post it to the UK due to Customs controls. Length: 5.20m. Beam 0.87m. Max. loading 350kg. Two integrated longitudinal airbags. Aluminium 2-piece mast, foresail and mainsail (56 sq.ft total, c. 4.5m2), 2 leeboards mounted on a cross-piece, pedal-controlled rudder. Hand pump, storage bottles and a flat-pack trolley included, but not paddles. (We still have the original Lendal paddles to use with our new inflatable toy kayak.) 07704 838 464 gwmorison@gmail.com
